SUMMARY:Seminar: Meet the winemaker Raúl Perez and His Stunning Spanish Wines
DESCRIPTION:Join Winemaker Raúl Pérez and Andrew Mulligan of Michael Skurnik wines for a tour through the cutting edge of the Spainish wine scene! \nRaúl makes wine in several different regions of Spain’s northwest\, but he makes his home (and some of his finest wines) in Bierzo. The wines in the Ultreia series follow the Burgundy model: a pair of entry-level “village” wines from multiple sites and then a collection of single-vineyard expressions. The majority of these vineyards are located in the village of Valtuille de Abajo\, where the Pérez family has lived and worked for generations. \nAlso included under the Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez label are some wines from outside of Bierzo in the Ribeira Sacra D.O. We will also taste Raúl’s Sketch Albariño\, undoubtedly his most famous bottling. Contrary to popular belief and\, indeed\, some reports in major media outlets\, this wine is not aged underwater. On selected Saturdays we will open a collection of new arrivals\, best buys and seasonal wines open to taste for a small fee. Informal\, quick and easy\, these “splash and dash” tastings provide a great way to taste\, learn and “try before you buy”!\n\nWe’ll kick off the series with a selection of superb wines from Sonoma’s Peay Vineyards\, one of the hottest wineries on the cool Sonoma Coast. Stop by anytime between 2pm – 4:45pm and we’ll guide you through a tasting flight of wines from this stellar winery. Almost more Burgundian than classically Californian in style (or Rhone-like in the case of the Syrahs)\, Peay wines are known for their beautifully delineated fruit tones\, focused precision\, fresh acidity\, moderate alcohol\, and their ability to age. Crafted by husband and wife Nick Peay (grape growing) and Vanessa Wong (winemaking\, formerly at Peter Michael)\, and managed by Nick’s brother Andy\, these wines represent the very best of the “new’ California.\n\nBrian and I were lucky enough to be able to taste through the line-up in NYC at our importer’s offices a few weeks back\, and were so impressed we wanted to recreate the experience for you!\n\nCome early and taste and run\, or come late and stay for dinner when the restaurant opens at 5!
